About this guide

A clearer way to choose your visit.

We turn supplier information and official attraction guidance into a practical comparison. Our job is to make the differences between visits easier to understand.

Updated How we keep this current ↗

Who is responsible for this guide?

Pages are prepared by the Gladiator Tours editorial team and edited by Rachel Donnelly. Rachel is from Boston and lives in Rome. She compares every tour by the exact option a visitor books, re-reads the archaeological park’s official ticket pages before the dates shown on each page, and keeps the date of every check. This is an independent guide, not the archaeological park or a tour operator. We do not claim to have personally attended the experiences described here.

Start with a real option

We check the product and the exact booking option together: route, English commentary, admissions, group arrangements, duration, meeting instructions and cancellation. Generic descriptions can cover several different options. Where supplier fields disagree, we retain the material conflict and explain what needs confirmation.

Ratings are evidence, not a promise

We show Viator and Tripadvisor ratings and review counts separately. Both rate the whole product, including its other languages and booking options. Selection uses the supplier’s combined product rating, rounded to one decimal, with a minimum of 4.5 out of 5 and at least 20 reviews. The complete review record is accessible through the booking button; we do not publish traveller review prose.

The default order balances the combined product rating and review volume: (rating × review count + 4.5 × 50) ÷ (review count + 50). This ordering value is not presented as a traveller rating.

Why these starting points?

The initial recommendations cover a shared visit, an underground visit and private guiding. Within each route and format, we use the same rating-and-volume order and select different provider products. Each recommendation carries an editorial reason and a practical tradeoff. These starting points do not limit the full catalogue or guarantee that one offer is best for everyone.

Collections follow the evidence

A tour may fit several relevant collections. There is no maximum collection size. Within a collection, one relevant option represents each provider product; other materially different options retain their own tour pages. Small-group means an explicit maximum of twelve people or fewer. Family visits require a child-focused service. We do not equate a private guide with exclusive entry to the monument.

Sources and freshness

Each tour page shows when its supplier evidence was checked. The dated research covers the returned pages of named Colosseum searches, an attraction-specific search and refreshed known candidates. Search results do not establish the entire Viator inventory. Official attraction guidance supports the ticket and planning explanations; it does not prove what a particular supplier includes.

A published product is not live availability. Verify the exact option, date, party, price and booking conditions with the provider before paying.

How this guide is funded

Provider links may earn us an affiliate commission when a reader books. The review threshold and route checks apply regardless of commission. We do not sell entry tickets, process tour payments or fulfil bookings.

What do the dates mean?

Updated is the date of the last recorded page-content change. Details checked is the last successful verification of the supplier evidence behind that exact option. Every day our server re-reads each published product from the supplier: ratings, review counts and the star distribution are refreshed automatically, and the checked date advances only when the facts behind the option (route, options, duration, inclusions, meeting arrangements) are unchanged. A product that stops being offered, or falls below our rating and review threshold, loses its booking button the same day. A changed fact holds that option until an editor reviews the source. Official guidance has its own check date. Rebuilding or redesigning a page alone does not refresh its facts.

Tour-data checks are scheduled daily. Ratings and source dates update after a successful check; changes to routes, guiding, meeting details or terms require review before publication. A failed or incomplete check retains the previous date. Products that no longer meet our rating threshold or are inactive are removed after verification. Prices and places for your chosen date still need to be confirmed on the booking page.
